News: The Red Queen Obernewtyn Chronicles Release

If you’re an Obernewtyn fan then you maybe had an inkling this was coming, but to confirm the news, The Red Queen, the seventh and FINAL book in the almost 20 year old series has officially moved to a 2013 release date.

We know so many of you have been patiently waiting for years and so we ask again, for you to draw on that patience. The complexity of finishing this wonderful series is one that Isobelle is dedicated to and she needs the time to finish the book with the same creativity and imagination that the entire Obernewtyn series has and without compromising her ideas.

You may have seen The Red Queen available from the US and UK very shortly. To clarify, this is not the final Book Seven in the series. In the US, The Sending is published as two separate books, Part 1 titled The Sending and Part 2 titled The Red Queen and due for release 30th April. If you have read The Sending Australian edition, then you have already read this book.

  2. After the release date for The Sending changed so many times over the years, I'm reluctant to believe this until I have the book in my hands!
But I so want it to be true!

  3. Waiting for years and years for each book wouldn't be so bad if only I didn't keep getting disappointed at the last minute by inaccurate release dates!

  4. I don't think your information is correct. As I understand it:

    North American Editions
    Book 1: Obernewtyn
    Book 2: The Farseekers
    Book 3: Ashling
    Book 4: The Keeping Place
    Book 5: Wavesong
    Book 6: The Stone Key
    Book 7: The Sending
Book 8: The Red Queen (series final)

    Australian Editions
    Book 1: Obernewtyn
    Book 2: The Farseekers
    Book 3: Ashling
    Book 4: The Keeping Place
Book 5: The Stone Key (incorporates the material in Wavesong)
Book 6: The Sending (series final and incorporates the material in The Red Queen)

    1. it seems to me that the final book in the australian version is the red queen but the cover that has the brown haired girl holding a sword. The australian sending was not the final... still waiting.

  5. After conducting some further research, I think I may now have to eat my words. It would appear that Book 8 of the North American editions and Book 7 of the Australian editions share the same title, but perhaps not the same content. Is this correct? I am totally confused. Can someone please put me out of my misery!

  6. Hi Sue H,

We're here to help! The Red Queen will be in Australia Book 7 of the series and it will be the final of the Obernewtyn series. It will contain all new material, never published before.

In the US, The Sending is being split into two books, with the second book titled The Red Queen. It will contain only the second half of the Australian edition of The Sending. The material from the Australian edition of The Red Queen will appear in the North American Book 9, which is yet to be titled.

    Hope that helps?

    1. Has the North American The Sending and The Red Queen been released yet? I thought they were supposed to have been released in 2012, but I haven't been able to find them.

  7. Thank you! How confusing to have the same name for books in the same series (albeit different editions) that contain different material. No wonder everyone is having trouble figuring out what is going on.

  8. How unsurprising. I am sick to death of the endless changes to the release date of this book. If you can't be sure that you can produce a book at a given time then you shouldn't provide a date at all, just say "coming". When we are given a date we focus on that and then when the date is changed yet again it just makes us very angry. I'm so over this.

  9. It hardly seems like she's dedicated to finishing it when leading up to the release date the book was supposed to have she's going on a bunch of book tours. It seems like she is just endlessly putting it off. How many delays have there been now? Years and years of them. So frustrating!

  10. I have no faith whatsoever that this book will be released in 2013. It will be the same story as every other book in the series. The release date will be delayed multiple times, for years.

Whatever. I refuse to read The Sending (Australian Edition) until the The Red Queen (Australian Edition) has been published.

    1. I thought the Stone Key was the last book, boy was I disappointed! Been reading this series since it was first published, I re read all the books for the last release thinking it was the final. Oh well a good read ahead when the Red Queen if finally released.

    2. I am the same, I have read them several times over thinking that each book will be the final one! I am now far too old for this series but have to find out what happens! I think it would be much better if she didn't go over and over parts of the story each time she writes a new book as it makes them tiresome. She should just assume that readers have read the other books. Would be much faster to write them too.

  11. I hear the frustrations of the Anonymous comments before me. I'm there too. I've been waiting for the end of the Obernewtyn Chronicles for years, just like all the other fans. It frustrates me in other ways though, that this has been put off. I'd also like the Legendsong to be finished, but Isobelle has declared that it won't be done until after Obernewtyn.

I realise that she's the author and has the power to concentrate on whatever projects interest her at the time, but it would be nice to get some conclusions happening. Too often I see a new Isobelle Carmody book has been released, but it's always something from a much more recent series or something completely new.

  12. I too am so annoyed by this. A group of us had started re-reading all the other books so we could get our theories in order and then be ready to read The Red Queen as soon as it comes out. I adore the Obernewtyn books but as a result of these years and years of delays I'm now very reluctant to start reading a new series unless all the books are out. I guess the publishers don't care about us readers - they know we are hooked and that we will still buy it when it comes out!

  13. I'm wondering why on earth the US edition is being called "The Red Queen" as I can't think of anything in the second half of AUS-The Sending that would make the title of The Red Queen make any sense whatsoever?!

  15. I, personally am a tad relieved that the date has been pushed back. After reading this intricate series over the many years it has taken IC to write them, I am happy to hold on to my anticipation, because I just don't think I'm ready to let go of the story.

I don't think its fair to ask an author to work to someone else's expectations. From what I gather, most authors write for the love of writing. Her books are written to HER standards, and that is why they're so damn good. I think everyone is lucky that she does release stories in the meantime, it means that everyone gets to experience more of IC's world's while we're waiting. Get a grip. Stop whinging.

    1. Exactly!! When the RQ finally comes out, I'll probably just hold it and not open it for weeks, because when I do I know I'll read it so quickly that it will all be over! I want to know what happens, but I will be so sad when it's all over and there aren't any more books to look forward to

  16. I started reading this series when I was 12... I'm 32 now. Hopefully the final book will come out before my 2 year old daughter turns 12. It has been a long, long wait...

After all these years and constant pushing back of release dates, we shouldn't be surprised by this.

It is a little sad that it has taken this long to complete, but after being patient for so many years, it has gotten to a point of no return for me and several of my friends.

We were extremely interested in this series, however as a group we have decided to no longer wait and have little to no expectation that the book will; 1, be completed and 2, be at the same standard of story as the first 4 and a half books.

The Sending was a little hollow and nowhere near as captivating as the previous books.

I personally have decided to cease waiting and give up on the series. I figure when the book eventually gets released, I will read the Wikipedia summary.

But I would like to hope that other fans and readers will continue their patience and enjoy, what is hopefully, the last book in the series.

  18. All of you should stop complaining! You have it easy. I moved to Canada a few years ago. Canada! I had to get my grandparents to bring the Sending over with them when they visited so I wouldn't have to pay the totally expensive shipping! What am i going to do for the Red Queen?

  19. Pfft. This series will never end. In 5 years or so, when the next book is FINALLY published, it will no doubt be announced that it is not the last book after all.

  20. I can't wait for the Red Queen to be released, as then I will never have to read ANYTHING of Isobelle Carmody's work again. As a child I was completely entranced by this series but as an adult 15 years later, and especially after Ashling it hasn't impressed me much. I kept hoping they would get better but they haven't. It's been disappointing.

  21. I cannot wait until this book is released. I get so embarrassed going to the teen section to buy a book for myself when I am in my mid 30s. I have been reading and re-reading these books since I was a lonely misfit 16 year old. I cannot wait to find out how Elspeth defeats Ariel and live in hope that she will see her 'family' from Obernewtyn again...damn hollywood endings...please come out in April and then I can get it for Mother's Day...

  22. I agree with much of the feedback above.

I have been frustrated and dissapointed with Isobelle's lack of appreciation to her fan base to deliver any of her books from book four onwards, in a timely and well written manor.

The editting of the last two books especially has been poor, with a number of errors throughout relating to both story content and general grammer.

Had Isobelle been working in the real world, she would have been fired for her lack of respect to timelines. As many have stated above, I started reading the books in my teens. I'm now in my 30s. Sometimes I want to simply boycott reading the books altogether to affect Isobelle's income the way she treats our eager desire for her books.

Basically, it feels like a slap in the face everytime Isobelle fails to live up to her end of the bargain. And it's not like she's blowing her dates by a month or two. It's several years, and it's been continuous.

I do hope all this feedback is filterd back to Isobelle.

  23. I have also been quite frustrated by the delays but I think when an author gets pushed for a deadline and the inspiration just isn't there then we get, well, "The Sending" not to put too fine a point on it. Pages and pages of nothing much at all. I don't mind waiting until she can write the book she really wants to write - there are plenty of other books out there in the meantime. I can't wait to read it, even if i'm old and wrinkly and grumpy and smelling faintly of cheese when it does finally arrive!

  24. I too am disappointed by the loooooooooong wait, same as many others i started reading the books when i was 10 or 11, im now 31. ive read and reread over the years the beginnings of all her stories, and enjoyed all of them. but never any closure as she doesnt seem to finish anything! for luds sake JUST FINISH IT!!!!!
    ps. then the legendsong please!

  25. I'm a little frustrated because I purposely look for completed series so I don't run into this problem and thought this one was done. Well I've only been waiting for a few years and am now confused reading your comments. I've read the US versions and I thought the stone key was the lastest one before the final installment....am I wrong, I hope so because I would love to find another one to tide me over until the next.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I agree, just finish it already. I have enjoyed them so much but I'm feeling jaded about the long wait and the constant rescheduling of release dates. I'm not buying anything else of hers - for my shelves or my library's until this one is finished!

    1. I started reading these when I was 12, which is 18 years ago now. When the first of the Legendsong books came out, I decided I wasn't going to start them until this series or Legendsong was complete ... still haven't started them.

  28. Can't wait any longer!! I started this series in 2011, it's been two years. Seems like forever! I seriously feel bad for the people that started this series when the first book was released, almost 20 years ago!!. Love The Obernewtyn Chronicles <3 <3 <3

  29. I have read The sending still waiting for The red queen which is still to be released disappointing to wait. I loved the sending I've read it 6 times already. I can wait just a little longer for the final book....please let it come out this year.

  30. You have to love the internet... a platform for so many whingers to whinge and whine....
If you are a fan of an author and a series, how can you be so rude and impatient for the author to finish such a popular series??? Do you want a substandard book early or a book that is finished to the satisfaction of the author?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'd rather just know the content, how it ends, the major plot ideas so that I finally know how it ends. If it comes down to it, I'd rather read a poorly edited version of the story and finally be finished with the series then have to wait another few years for the perfected version.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It's been so long that I don't really care about the Obernewtyn Chronicles anymore. I just want them to end so I can finally read the end of the Legendsong Trilogy! Maybe in another 5 years... Gah. And people say G.R.R.Martin is a slow writer!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I don't understand why people are getting so angry about the release date. I too first read Obernewtyn when I was 12 and now nearly 30 am still waiting for the final book. Yes, it does get frustrating when you think it's over to only be left hanging, but that's what makes this series so captivating. I would rather wait for IC to release a story she is happy with, than reading something that is thrown together just to make a few people happy to have it over. I would be more disappointed if the series just ended without any substance or closure for the characters (which we all clearly have formed bonds with). I think there's nothing worse than waiting so long for a movie only to be disappointed by how it was put together. Have a little patience guys, as I'm sure what IC puts together will be all worth it in the end.

  34. "how can you be so rude and impatient for the author to finish such a popular series?"

Hmm, I think waiting twenty years shows rather a lot of patience.

Given that I've been waiting a very long time for Carmody to finish Obernewtyn, The Legendsong trilogy AND her Gateway Trilogy, I've often wondered if she has some kind of mental block that makes it impossible for her to to write resolutions.

It wouldn't be so disappointing and frustrating for her fans if she didn't keep releasing new series that she also never finishes.

Of course we want her to write the best book she can. It's just human nature for us to want resolution and it's very difficult waiting such a very long time. Since Carmody probably has some vague idea of how each series ends she doesn't have to bear the anticipation and anxiety felt by her fans... I do sometimes feel as though she doesn't really appreciate where we're coming from with our pleas to please just let us read how it ends!
